Chris Paul scored 42 points and had three of his 15 assists on consecutive alley-oop dunks by Blake Griffin during a 30-second span of the third quarter, leading the Los Angeles Clippers to a 126-115 victory over Golden State in their home opener on Thursday night. The Clippers, who won the franchise's first division title last season with a club-record 56 wins, began their 30th season in Los Angeles on Tuesday night with a 116-103 loss to the Lakers - the designated home team in the arena they are sharing for the 15th season. This is the first season in which the Lakers' championship banners and retired numbers will be covered up during Clippers home games by banners depicting some of their players in action - an innovation by new head coach Doc Rivers. Five Clippers scored in double figures.

Derrick Rose made a baseline floater with 5.7 seconds left to lift the Chicago Bulls to an 82-81 victory over the New York Knicks on Thursday night in his first home game since he injured his left knee 18 months ago. Rose had 18 points on 7-of-23 shooting and committed four turnovers. But there was no doubt who was getting the ball after Tyson Chandler went 1 for 2 at the line to give New York an 81-80 lead with 10.8 seconds remaining. The speedy point guard, who was a game-time decision for his return due to a sore neck, got the ball on the wing and drove to the baseline for the go-ahead basket, drawing a standing ovation from the delirious crowd at the United Center.

Caleb Sturgis missed a 34-yard field goal badly late in the opening quarter, and the Miami Dolphins were hearing boos from their home fans during a scoreless first quarter against the Cincinnati Bengals on Thursday night. Dolphins defensive end Cameron Wake gave his team the ball at the Cincinnati 25 after stripping it away from Bengals quarterback Andy Dalton late in the quarter. On fourth-and-1, Dolphins coach Joe Philbin sent in the field-goal unit, to the dismay of some in the crowd. Dolphins quarterback Ryan Tannehill was 2 for 4, collecting only 9 yards.

Every time Kentucky coach John Calipari starts to praise his latest crop of talented freshmen, he's just as quick to point out that it is a work in progress. As the Wildcats take the first step toward coming together, Calipari will also have to remind his players to get through those growing pains quickly, because they are now the team to beat in college basketball. Kentucky - with a collection of high school All-Americans - is ranked No. 1 in The Associated Press' preseason Top 25, a significant step considering the Wildcats finished 21-12 last season and were upset by Robert Morris in the first round of the NIT. It's Kentucky's third preseason No. 1 and first since 1995-96 when the Wildcats won the national championship.

Miami Dolphins tackle Jonathan Martin left the team this week to receive professional assistance for emotional issues, a person familiar with the situation said, and was ruled out of Thursday night's game against Cincinnati. Martin was with relatives, and his issues didn't involve any problems with the coaching staff, the person said. The person spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because the Dolphins have said not released any details of the illness. He was replaced by Tyson Clabo, who started Miami's first six games before being benched.

The Indians have released controversial closer Chris Perez and re-signed veteran slugger Jason Giambi. A two-time All-Star, Perez wore out his welcome in Cleveland. He lost his job in the final week of the season as the Indians were trying to clinch a wild-card berth. He angered Indians fans for saying they didn't support the team and he rankled Cleveland's front office when he said it wasn't spending enough to win.

(AP Photo/Marcio Jose Sanchez, File)

All-Pro 49ers linebacker Aldon Smith turned himself in to Santa Clara County authorities this week, then immediately posted $75,000 bail. Santa Clara County district attorney's spokesman Sean Webby confirmed Thursday that Smith had surrendered and posted bail late Tuesday, an expected move after he was charged Oct. 9 with three felony counts of illegal possession of an assault weapon, stemming from a party at his home in June 2012. 49ers coach Jim Harbaugh said on his weekly radio show with 95.7 The Game that Smith met with 49ers officials Wednesday at team headquarters. Harbaugh has traded text messages with Smith, and said on the radio ''he's made quite a bit of progress.'' If that's the case, Smith could rejoin the team as soon as Monday following the bye week and be ready to play for the 49ers (6-2) for a Nov. 10 home game against the Carolina Panthers.

McIlroy bolts out to the lead at HSBC Champions (Yahoo Sports)
Oct 31st 2013, 13:13

Rory Mcllory of Northern Ireland hits out of a bunker on the 8th hole during the first round of the HSBC Champions golf tournament at the Sheshan International Golf Club in Shanghai, China, Thursday, Oct. 31, 2013. McIlroy looked more like a two-time major champion Thursday when he opened with a 7-under 65 to build a two-shot lead in HSBC Champions. McIlroy was at his best around the turn when he made four birdies in a five-hole stretch. (AP Photo/Eugene Hoshiko)

For at least one round, Rory McIlroy finally looked like the former No. 1 player in the world instead of a guy who hasn't won a tournament all year. With eight birdies and hardly any stress, McIlroy opened the HSBC Champions on Thursday with a 7-under 65 for a two-shot lead over Gonzalo Fernandez-Castano and Jamie Donaldson. It was the first time since he won in Dubai last November that McIlroy has been in the outright lead after any round. ''It felt good to be out there and in control of my golf ball,'' McIlroy said.

David Ortiz headed to the plate, ready to hit for the final time in the World Series. St. Louis catcher Yadier Molina stood up, spoke softly to his pal and twice patted him on the side. By that point, even the Cardinals were members of the Big Papi fan club. Ortiz walked off as the MVP after Boston won 6-1 Wednesday night in Game 6, capping a week in which he spurred the Red Sox with a mix of power, patience and a most timely pep talk.
